What is the true nature of digital photography? Many people have been asking this question for a long time. In fact, when people ask the question about the true nature of digital photography, they often mean to ask whether it is art or it is science.

Here are some arguments for both sides:

A) Art – many people consider digital photography as an art because it allows for an expression of emotion. They believe that digital photography is a continuation of the art of drawing or painting. You see, digital photography is just like painting in the sense that although it does take accurate pictures of reality, it also allows for some modification through the various digital tools available today.

Even without the editing many people still believe that digital photography is art because of the fact that it does take an artist's eye to find a great subject of digital photography. The nature of digital photography as an art has something to do with the fact that an artist is able to express emotions and statements through visual subjects.

The supporters of the "artistic nature of digital photography" also argue their case by stating its ability to convey emotional messages through aesthetics. The beauty of each photograph, of course, needs also to be credited to the person taking the pictures. One of the strongest arguments for the artistic nature of digital photography is the fact that the picture is rarely really what is seen with the naked eye. Through the camera and computer, a person can alter the image in order to present what he or she wants to show.

B) Science – some people argue that science is the true nature of digital photography. Photography Tip: Adjust the Background to Highlight Your Subject

Many times the emphasis you want to place on the subject of your photo can be improved by first focusing your attention on the background. Objects, colors and other elements in the background can often diminish from what would otherwise be a great photograph.

When you are composing your image through your camera's viewfinder or LCD monitor, take a moment to focus on what is appearing behind and around the main subject. Our minds filter out elements that we're not concentrating on, so it is quite easy to overlook telephone poles or other vertical elements that seem to 'grow out of the head' of your subject. Other people or objects in the background may also seem to be attached to your subject because of their alignment. Colorful signs, bright colors, and other unusual objects in the background can vie for your viewer's attention.

If you notice that the background is affecting your photograph in a detracting way, the easiest solution may be to simply change position. A slightly different angle or perspective can make a huge difference in the final shot. If changing your lateral position is difficult, try adjusting your vertical position. A high-angle or low-angle shot may be the ticket to eliminating background clutter, and the unique angle could potentially give you a more interesting photo as a bonus. The zoom feature of many cameras can also be used to crop the edges of the photo; simply zoom in and out until extraneous objects are cut out and the ideal composition is found.

While a simple, plain background will help your subject stand out without much effort, patterned or colorful background elements do not necessarily have to be avoided. By adjusting the aperture and shutter speed of your camera manually, the focal length of the photo can be shortened so that your subject remains in crystal clear focus while the entire background is transformed into a blend of abstract colors and distracting objects are blurred past recognition.

Digital photography offers the added benefit of being able to improve your photograph after the fact. Photo editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint) allows you to modify your images in ways only limited by your imagination. With a problem background, for example, the entire background of the photo can be blurred, softened, lightened or darkened until the subject stands out.

Clutter or detracting objects can literally be removed from the photograph entirely. Expert software users can cut the subject from the photo in order to place it in a more suitable position. If all else fails, you can 'cut' the subject from the original photo and 'paste' it into a completely different background... just be sure to blend the edges into the new background, and make doubly sure that the coloring and shadows are compatible.

There are various types of lighting, the photographer can employ. The most common is the Directional lighting provided by flash, tungsten or several sources and can be used from the front, back or side.

Front lighting is the most in vogue but it reveals every detail. The light is at the back of the photographer beaming at the face of the subject highlighting every detail. This often results in an unexciting and flat look of your subjects. Another technique is to mystify your subject by lighting up from side. The main illumination from side adds interest and vigor with presence of dark shadows.

In Back lighting the source light remains in the rear of the subject shining in the face of the camera. The main advantage here is, you will be able to capture the natural expressions of your subject in an outdoor shoot, as he will not squint facing bright light.

You can employ Cross lighting where strong directional light comes from both sides. But this method is only suitable for studios with bright flash or tungsten lights.

These significant features make the Nikon D40 Camera more appealing. Yet one of the most significantly difference is that you can no longer alter the exposure steps. There is a custom Auto ISO option. This option was available with the D80 series also.

I love taking pictures. I just can't get enough. The more pictures I take the better I want to get. This also means that the more pictures I take; the more high quality equipment I want. It's an addiction. Many photography hobbyists have the same problem I do. If you don't want to pour all your money into your photography hobby, there is another option.

You can turn that photography hobby into a successful photography business. A great way to get started doing this is through stock photography. Businesses all over are looking for pictures to use in brochures, websites, advertisements, and more. These businesses will happily pay for your pictures rather than hire a photographer to take pictures for them. Here are some tips on how to get started on making money from your photography.

The first thing you need to do to start your stock photography business is to decide if you want to sell your pictures on micro or macro stock photography sites. Micro stock sites (ie. istock, dreamstime, and shutterstock) operate on the premise that if you offer photography at a low price, you'll get more sales (which they do). These sites sell pictures for as low as a dollar for small sizes, up to ten or twenty dollars for a large copy of your picture. They also offer other options like allowing prints, and exclusive license (they pay you a lot more but you can no longer sell the picture to anyone else). Photographers get a percentage of the sale, which can vary from 20 to 80 percent of the sale price. Many photographers don't like these sites because they sell photography for much less than they feel it's worth, but many small businesses rely on them for affordable stock pictures. The other option is macro stock photography (ie Alamy and MyLoupe).

You will probably sell A LOT fewer pictures on macro stock sites, but on these sites you make significantly more per picture, usually around $250 per photo (as opposed to the 60 cents I made off my first micro sale). Most of these sites will only accept pictures with over 6MP, but if your camera has fewer pixels, you can learn to upsize your photo in an editing program. While it is your own choice which route to take, many photographers start out on micro sites and then start moving their best pictures over to macro photography sites as their skills improve. You should note that some macro sites will not do business with photographers who sell their work on micro sites, so be sure to check their policies before uploading.

Once you've started uploading pictures, you need to remember not to stop. The more pictures you have online, the more sales you will make. Most sites have uploading limits and if you can, you should try to put up as many pictures as you are allowed. You should also put your pictures on as many sites as possible. Many people have their favorite stock site and only look for pictures there. This means you can put shots up on multiple sites; although many sites will guarantee you a higher percentage if you decide to upload a picture to their site exclusively. I would try not to overlap picture on macro and micro sites since someone probably wont pay $300 for a picture they can get for $1.

The next key to becoming a top seller is to take pictures with content that sells. Whatever you're subject is, you will almost assuredly sell more pictures if the background is a solid color. Black and white are the best, but any solid color will work. Generally people want a subject without a background. If the background is a solid color, it's much easier to remove with an editing program. If you want to know what subjects sell best, most sites have a section where you can see their most popular downloads.

Just remember to get inspiration from these photographs, don't copy them. If all else fails, you can never go wrong with pictures of people. You will need to get releases signed ahead of time for pictures of people with recognizable faces and also of recognizable property.

A lot of people think digital photography is too difficult for kids to master, but you can easily prove them wrong. After all, what's one of the perks of digital photography? You can take a hundred pictures, decide you hate them, and delete them all without paying a cent for film and development. That makes digital photography and kids a perfect match: kids like to mess around and with digital cameras, they can.
If you've thought about introducing your kids to digital photography and want to do it in a fun and interesting way, try some of these ideas.

It's a snap to get kids interested in digital photos

1. Get them their own cameras

Trust me: your nine-year-old won't know the difference between an expensive digital camera and one that costs $20, which makes it easy to make digital photography a fun new family habit. As long as it takes pictures, that's all they care about.

2. Have fun with it

It sounds obvious, but too many people make hobbies chores when they try to teach them to children. Share your love of digital photography. Point out cool things you can do with the camera. Look for "perfect moments" together, and have fun creating goofy moments of your own.

3. Do something with the pictures

There's nothing worse than spending two weeks taking pictures, deleting them, considering them, finally selecting your favorites -- and then seeing them wind up in a heap on the floor, or stuck in a photo album at the back of the closet, or... well, you get the idea.
Fortunately, digital photography lends itself well to many different activities:
Scrapbooking. Introduce your kids to the joys of scrapbooks. Trust me: it has stickers, so they'll love it.

Create a photo book.

Make a photo book online or with a program like iPhoto. Not only is it fun to do, but you get the added excitement of seeing something you created on the computer arrive on your doorstep.

Share your photos online.

It is definitely possible that you can take fantastic photos with a simple point-and-shoot digital camera. The problem doesn't lie with the camera. You can take super lousy shots with the most sophisticated Canon dSLR. It is the skills of the photographer.Below are 10 professional digital photography tips you can use without having to fork out money on expensive equipment:

1. Warming Up the Tones

Do you realized that the shots you took sometimes have a cool, clammy feel? The default white balance setting for most digital camera is "auto". This is okay for most shots but it is more towards the "cool" side.
Try taking a test. Take some outdoor shots with white balance "auto" on and then take the same picture with "cloudy" setting. I am sure you will like the "warm" image better.

2. Use Macro Mode

Some amazing fine details of an object can be taken using "macro" mode. Try activating "macro" mode on your digital camera and explore your surroundings. Objects like flowers and insects can give you very interesting images which you can never thought of.
Bear in mind that you will have shallow depth of field when using "macro" mode. Hence, just focus on the part of the object that is most important for you and let the rest of the image go soft.

3. Use Polarizing Filter

Want to enhance your photos with some punch? You should get yourself a polarizing filter. It is very good for outdoor and landscape shooting. You can lower glare and get rid of unwanted reflections. Polarizing shots have richer and more saturated colors.
Your digital camera can't insert filter? No problem. Use a pair of quality sunglasses. Take them off your eyes and use them as a polarizing filter. Place them as near to your digital camera's lens as possible. It works! I have been using this trick for years!

4. Outdoor Photos that Shine

Do you know you can always put "flash" mode on always? Don't let your digital camera determines the light setting. You can control!
When in "flash on" mode, your camera exposes for the background first. It then adds sufficient flash to illuminate your portrait subject. Your photo will end up where the composition looks good.
Another great technique is to put your object under a shade, e.g: under a tree, and use the flash to illuminate the object. This will keep the person looks comfortable with no squinted eyes due to the sun glare.

5. High Storage Media Cards

Even the most common digital cameras nowadays range between 5-8 megapixel. A high resolution picture can take up massive space. You don't want to miss a great shot because your media card is full. Try to get a 1GB card for your digital camera which are 5 megapixel and above.
Even with just a simple digital camera, you can take great shots. All you need is some creativity and skills. With some professional digital photography tips I mentioned above, you can take on dSLR photographers with lousy skills.

Taking pictures on film has limitations. Film cameras are able to produce relatively few pictures: 24 or 36 in standard 35mm cameras. Once taken a picture allows for no recall if an error is made. It will be developed with the rest of the pictures. To get pictures is a slow and expensive process. Displaying pictures is somewhat inconvenient and requires albums or projectors. And how often do we bring these out? Why not go directly from Digital Camera to the computer and benefit from all the features Digital Photography has.

Digital Cameras allow you to see what you want to take, take it, and immediately review the finished product. If the image is unsatisfactory, it can be eliminated. If it is acceptable, there is ample room for its storage in the camera which can hold 100 or more pictures. Once downloaded, the picture storage space on the camera is renewed, and one begins again from zero. No need to carry bulky film canisters. No need to take film in for development and wait for hours or days for its return. No need to dispose of unsatisfactory shots already paid for. No need to order numerous copies for others at considerable expense. There is a good deal of waste and expense associated with film cameras.

With digital cameras even poor images can be saved. There are a number of programs available on the computer to improve the appearance of a picture. Red-eye can be removed by two clicks of a mouse. Images can be sharpened, lighting can be enhanced or reduced, images can be cropped, straightened, narrowed or widened, and turned 180 degrees in either direction. All of this can be done with programs that come with your computer or perhaps your printer. And if you do want prints, either your printer and produce them or you can have it done at the photo store or the drugstore in an instant. Then there is emailing. Send pictures to anyone who wants them who might otherwise have missed out on having them had they been on film.

Digital Cameras have opened up new, easy, and satisfying ways to produce images that you will enjoy and cherish for a long time to come. Perhaps you have a friend who owns a digital camera. Talk to him about it; I believe you’ll find that he too will encourage you to begin digital photography.

Digital photography is here to stay! Refresh your memory banks and think back to the first digital cameras. Have you ever stopped to think what impact this form of photography would have on the world? Maybe, maybe not?
